Care

ImageThe animals are an integral part of the circus and are treated as part of the family. Their well-being is of utmost importance. Careful attention is paid to their diets. They get the best food and care. They are groomed, exercised and have their enclosures cleaned daily. Animal keepers and trainers are never far from their charges 24 hours a day. We spend far more time with our animals than the average working person is able to spend with their pets. We know the minutiae of our animals’ characters and moods very well and any sign that an animal may be unwell is noticed and attended to straight away. We have an extensive knowledge of the treatment of minor ailments. There are a number of specialist vets who we can call to attend to anything more serious.

Performing animals often live longer than their wild or more idle counterparts, due in part to their active and enriched lifestyle, which includes regular exercise and interaction with other animals and humans. Vetinary care, grooming and good nutrition also play important roles.

Training

The Boswells have been working with and training animals for many generations. More than a century of knowledge has been accrued. Training is through a method called positive reinforcement. Simply put, when the animal grasps what is being asked of it, it is rewarded with praise and edible treats. This method takes patience but a strong bond of respect, love and trust is established between the animal and the trainer. We do not condone the ill-treatment or abuse of any animals.

Transport

The animals are comfortably transported between venues. They load easily into their trucks and do not display any signs of stress before, during, or after they are moved to the next venue.

Value

We regard it as a great privilege to work with animals. We are aware that many people do not have the opportunity to see, let alone get close to some animals. The circus gives them that opportunity. Some of the animals we have are endangered species (e.g. tigers, chimpanzees) and we have been successfully breeding these animals and adding to their numbers for years.
